Etienne Esajas curled in an early free kick and went on to inspire Sheffield Wednesday to victory over Cardiff.
Peter Whittingham equalized with a penalty won by Michael Chopra and City had two goals disallowed for offside.
But at the start of the second period a superb Esajas cross found Luke Varney who headed in from close range.
Cardiff saw Joe Ledley sent off for a second yellow, substitute Leon Clarke completing the rout with a fine left-footed volley off Esajas' deep cross.
The victory ended a two-game losing streak for the Owls and deepened Cardiff's antipathy for a Hillsborough ground where they saw their play-off dreams ended in the final game of last season.
The Bluebirds have now lost four of their last five Championship matches and have dropped out of the top six.
Errors at the back did not help them, Mark Hudson fouling Varney ahead of the opening goal and David Marshall seemingly stranded on the line as Esajas found the mark with the help of a post.
The game ended 3-1 to Sheffield Wednesday.
